Azle school board

Star-Telegram

Trustees oversee the school district by setting policies, hiring a superintendent to conduct day-to-day business, and adopting annual budgets and tax rates. They serve three-year terms and are unpaid.

    Place 1

    Name: Gary Hann (incumbent)

    Age: 54

    City: Azle

    Occupation: Service technician

    Online: none

Background: After graduating from San Angelo Central High School, Hann spent 20 years in the U.S. Air Force. He earned a bachelor's degree in business from Texas Wesleyan University. He has worked at Airgas since 1997.

About the candidate: Hann ran three times before being elected to the board in 2005. He's often the lone dissenter on board votes. He opposed a $1,000 stipend that the district granted to his wife and other employees who attended a one-day seminar. "I want to be around to make sure the bond goes smoothly and money gets to where it needs to be," he said.

    Name: Kinny Pack

    Age: 63

    City: Azle

    Occupation: Nursing home administrator

    Online: none

Background: Pack has a bachelor's degree in business administration from Oklahoma City University. He has worked in nursing homes since 1969, including Azle Manor since 1975, and has taught nursing home administration courses at a Tulsa junior college.

About the candidate: Pack was a school trustee for 21 years before unsuccessfully running for mayor in 2001. He said his experience managing a 142-bed skilled nursing home with 150 employees while the owners built another facility will help him oversee the $99.8 million bond issue if voters approve it.

    Place 2

Erik Loeffelholz is unopposed for the seat now held by Scot Parnell.
