West Coast Resort at Pelican Hill
Opening in stages this year on 504 acres near Newport Beach, Calif.
Why go: Rising over quiet, white beaches along the Pacific Ocean, this extravagant retreat began with a Tom Fazio-designed, 36-hole golf club, opened in November with clifftop shots among the happy distractions. Italian architecture dominates the resort, which will include 204 bungalow rooms and suites and 128 villas, all set to open this fall.
You can hang out by your fireplace and gaze at the ocean or -- if you're in a villa -- have your butler whip up a pitcher of martinis while your chef puts together dinner.
The circular swimming pool, with a design evoking the Roman Coliseum, features terraced decks with cabanas, sunbathing areas and dining spots. There's terrace dining at Andrew, the northern Italian restaurant, and the 23,000-square-foot spa, designed after the Baths at Caracalla, has Roman-style soaking pools, every kind of treatment and a top-notch fitness center. Itching to get hitched? Pelican Hill has indoor and outdoor wedding venues.
Good to know: Pelican Hill is close to the Laguna Art Museum, Laguna Playhouse, Orange County Art Museum, shopping at Fashion Island and Corona del Mar Plaza. It's also near great horseback riding, hiking and cycling at Crystal Cove State Park.
Details: Fly into Orange County's John Wayne Airport, 10 minutes from the resort; air starts at $299. Resort rates start at $695. 800-820-6800; www.pelicanhill.com.

When you're not lounging in a private cabana beside the beachside swimming pool fashioned like a lagoon, you can while away the day in the spa for the signature therapies, such as a facial incorporating extracts of powdered pearls and a massage utilizing crushed pearl paste.
If romance is on the itinerary, you can't beat a moonlit nature walk.

Why go: The complex of 165 studios and suites opening onto 12 miles of powdery beachfront takes its name from the stars in the Pleiades constellation. You'll find the 22-acre spread covered by courtyards and gardens, surrounded by rolling landscape decorated with wild yellow orchids.
Want privacy on the sand? Ask your concierge to book one of the bedded pavilions in the dunes for a day, where you can read, nap, and have lunch and drinks. You can spend ample time in the spa for every possible treatment, or you can have a hand-and-foot massage by the swimming pool.

Asia Courtyard by Marriott Phuket
Opening June 1 in Surin Beach, Thailand
Why go: This is the first of four high-concept Courtyards opening in Thailand this year. In contrast to the somewhat simple motor hotels we know Courtyard to be in our part of this world, the Southeast Asian version of this brand brings resort elements to extensively remodeled, existing hotels. The Surin Beach location has 256 rooms that present affordable, family-friendly lodging for travelers at this hugely popular Thai beach resort. Surin gives you extensive, uncluttered beaches, where you'll find seafood shacks and cafes, and plentiful snorkeling, kayaking and surfing. The hotel will also have its own beach club with food service. If you bring the kids, they'll be tickled to have their own swimming and play places at the hotel's Kids' Club, with arts and crafts, science lab, computer room, dress-up area, cooking classes and movie theater.
Good to know: Opening later in the year, Courtyard by Marriott will have similar resorts at Patong Beach, a magnet for its nightlife and restaurants; Kamala Beach, next to the 140-acre Thai-culture theme park with carnival, games and shopping; and Cha-Am Beach, a quieter destination with a fishing village.
Details: Fly to Phuket, typically with stops in Los Angeles and Hong Kong or Seoul, for about $1,684 and up. Lodging rates start at about $127. 888 236-2427; www.marriott.com.
Note: In researching airfare prices, we found prices based on low- or shoulder-season travel periods for each destination.
For Munich, fares searched were for mid-October; for Cozumel/Caribbean, mid-September; for Orange County, Calif., mid-October; for Florida, mid-August; for Casablanca, mid-May; and for Thailand, mid-May.
