For one quarter Thursday night, Saginaw looked like it might make its first-ever playoff game one to remember.

The Rough Riders stood toe to toe with Denton Ryan, the state’s seventh-ranked Class 4A team early, grabbing a 7-6 lead after the first 12 minutes.

From that point, the Raiders ran off 42 consecutive points on their way to a 48-7 victory in a 4A Region I Division I bi-district playoff game at Northwest High School.

Ryan (10-1) advanced to the area round, where it will meet the winner of tonight’s Arlington Heights-Arlington Seguin game.

Scotty Young paced a Ryan offense that gained 410 yards. He completed 15 of 19 passes for 246 yards and four touchdowns. Saginaw (4-7) moved the ball offensively as well, racking up 333 yards, but five fumbles (two lost) and an interception stalled several drives.

Quarterback Henry Munoz finished his Saginaw career by completing 10 of 13 passes for 95 yards and added 41 on the ground, including his team’s only score. His favorite target was fellow senior Logan Sumpter, who finished with seven receptions for 50 yards.

The Riders controlled the second half, moving the ball on their first three possession, but two ended in fumbles and the other an interception. All three turned into Ryan scores.

Saginaw had the ball for 19:33 in the second half, but was decimated by turnovers.

Ryan recovered a Saginaw fumble to set up its first drive at the Riders’ 39. Five plays and 1:22 later, Young connected with Antonio Anderson for a 4-yard touchdown.

Ryan’s second possession started at its 34 following an interception, and 2:04 later, Will Clark scored on a 30 yard-yard run. The other Ryan score of the second half was a 70-yard fumble return by Bryce Scott.
