SOUTHLAKE — For the second consecutive year, Denton Guyer ended Saginaw Boswell’s season.
Last year the Wildcats (10-1) knocked out the Pioneers (7-4) by a mere eight points, but this time the offenses exploded in the first quarter and Guyer prevailed 59-28 in a Class 4A Division I victory at Dragon Stadium.Early on, it looked as if Boswell might get revenge when the Pioneers forced and recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff. Senior quarterback Quinton Gregory needed only three plays to find senior running back Dante Lipscomb all alone in the middle of the field for a 55-yard touchdown. But the Wildcats responded just three plays later when junior quarterback J.W. Walsh scored on a 34-yard run. After junior kicker Jared Hilgendorf nailed a 39-yard field goal to give Boswell a 10-7 lead, Walsh scored on a 47-yard run on a three-play scoring drive.Gregory hit junior wide receiver Jacob Stone for an 11-yard touchdown to give Boswell their last lead of the game at 17-14. Three plays later Walsh threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Connor Crane to regain the lead 21-17.Hilgendorf kicked a 29-yard field goal to start the second quarter, but the Pioneers needed touchdowns, not field goals to keep pace with the Wildcats.Guyer scored two more touchdowns in the first half on a 59-yard pass from Walsh to Crane and a 9-yard run by senior Jaimaine Wilhite. The rushing duo of Wilhite and Walsh shredded the Boswell defense. Wilhite had 191 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns. Walsh added 115 yards on 12 touches and two touchdowns on the ground. The Pioneers as a team ran for 44 yards on 18 carries.Gregory finished with 22 completions for 339 yards and three touchdowns for the Pioneers.
