ARLINGTON — The Bowie Volunteers enjoyed dynamic, fireworks-style big plays Thursday night.
Each of Bowie’s powerful moments were captured in full HD on the Cowboys Stadium super-board in the 42-30 victory against Richland. The Volunteers (9-2) moved past the Rebels (6-5) in the Class 5A Division II bi-district matchup and will face the winner of Saturday’s El Paso Montwood-Amarillo game. The big plays proved plentiful for the Volunteers, but perhaps none was bigger than Malcolm Surrell’s 80-yard kickoff return in the third quarter.Richland trailed 28-9 midway through the third quarter before the Rebels grabbed the game’s momentum.Richland quarterback Tyler Cotton passed to Walker Burns for a 31-yard touchdown and a 28-16 deficit. The Rebels then recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff to set up Richland 11 yards from the end zone. Three plays later, another touchdown pass from Cotton cut the margin to 28-23.However, Bowie turned the momentum when Surrell took the kickoff the distance to give the Volunteers a 35-23 lead with 4:30 left in the third quarter.Surrell’s run essentially sealed the game as the teams traded touchdowns in the fourth quarter."We had a chance to get down right there, but a big kickoff return and we’re back in the game," Bowie coach Kenny Perry said. "It was a game of big plays — that’s a part of this game — and I was proud of our kids for fighting."Bowie jumped to a lead behind big plays, including another by Surrell.Volunteers receiver Langston Williams opened the scoring on a 43-yard reception of a pass by quarterback Deric Davis.Richland responded with a safety when Jordan Maldonado tackled a Bowie receiver in the end zone for the 7-2 deficit.Bowie then rolled off 21 points in a row, including a 28-yard interception return for a touchdown by Surrell, en route to the 28-9 lead at the break.Richland scrapped throughout the game behind the leadership and arm of Cotton. The senior threw for 295 yards, going 25-of-41.Cotton enjoyed a pair of 31-yard touchdown strikes and a third from 5 yards. The Volunteers were able to slow the Richland running game to 31 yards.Davis threw for three touchdowns and added 96 rushing yards."Big plays played a big part of this game," Davis said.Tobias Xavier Lopez, 817-390-7760
