Wade Phillips likes Dallas Cowboys’ chemistry

IRVING — Coach Wade Phillips can’t deny it.

The Dallas Cowboys are on a roll and feeling good about themselves following Sunday’s 20-16 victory against the Philadelphia Eagles.

It was their fourth consecutive win and has them sitting alone in first place in the NFC East.

With the Cowboys favored in the next three games — Sunday at Green Bay before home games against the Washington (2-6) and Oakland (2-6) on Thanksgiving — they have a chance to pile on more wins before the December stretch.

The key, according to Phillips, is taking it one game at a time. He said that’s the attitude the Cowboys used to build their hot streak.

Phillips says he believes this team will keep things in the proper perspective and avoid over-confidence because the makeup is different than past seasons. It has great chemistry and less egos — and thus has a better sense of team.

"I think they have a good feeling together," Phillips said. "We have enough young people with veterans. If you want to talk chemistry or whatever, I think we have that with this team. We’re not a big ego team. We’re kind of a selfless team. But we’ll find out more now with everyone telling them they’re great. But I think they’ll handle it out."

The good feelings started coming together with the departure of distracting players such as Terrell Owens, Roy Williams, Greg Ellis, Adam Jones and Tank Johnson during the off-season.

Linebacker Bradie James said the Cowboys like each other and truly have each other’s back, which has been evident in the four-game winning streak. None more so than in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s comeback victory against the Eagles.

"This year, so far, has been definitely the best team atmosphere," James said. "With the characters we have on this team, guys are really just playing for one another, understanding the goals we have, sticking by each other’s side. You want to know as players what you can count on and who you can rely on when the funk hits the fan and we know that we can definitely rely on each other."

Austin doubled, but open

For the first time in his four games as a starter, wide receiver Miles Austin found himself facing double coverage Sunday against Philadelphia.

That partly explains why Austin had just the one catch, albeit one that went 49 yards for the game-winning touchdown. However, Wade Phillips said Austin was open "quite a bit" and that he made it difficult for the Eagles’ cornerbacks to jam him at the line of scrimmage.

"They doubled him some, which we hadn’t seen, but a lot of the time he was open. It just wasn’t the read that Tony [Romo] had," Phillips said. "I feel good about him being consistent in that he is running good routes and he is hard to cover.

"Hopefully, we will hit him some more times when he has those openings."

Barber promised save

After the defense stuffed Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb’s sneak on fourth-and-1 with 10:49 left in the fourth quarter, Cowboys running back Marion Barber told his defensive teammates that he’d take care of the rest.

"He told the defense he was going to put them away," Wade Phillips said.

Barber started Dallas’ ensuing go-ahead touchdown drive with a 10-yard run and then rushed three consecutive times on the game’s final drive to burn the clock.

Cornerback signed

The Cowboys signed cornerback Jamar Love to the practice squad. Love originally signed with New England as an undrafted free agent April 30.
