Wetteland, Rangers minor league coordinator join Mariners staff
The Texas Rangers are searching for a minor league pitching coordinator after division rival Seattle hired Rick Adair as pitching coach Wednesday.
The Mariners also named former Rangers closer John Wetteland as bullpen coach on new manager Don Wakamatsu’s staff. Wakamatsu was a Rangers’ coach from 2003 to 2007.
Adair’s departure wasn’t stunning news to general manager Jon Daniels. Adair surfaced last week as a candidate, and the Mariners asked for permission to speak to him Monday.
Daniels said the Rangers have a short list of external and internal candidates and hope to have someone in place before the month ends.
“I’m really happy for Rick,” Daniels said. “Indirectly, this says some pretty good things about what we’re doing. Typically, people get hired from successful organizations.”
Adair is a former big league pitching coach with Cleveland and Detroit, but he oversaw the Rangers’ minor league pitchers the past four seasons.
