Defending Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones' actions has become nearly impossible

I have been defending Owner Jones a lot lately.

Mostly based on him not going anywhere and partially because he’s actually a pretty good owner. He spends and he cares and he tries. Mostly he tries. And so complaints that he’s ruining his Cowboys usually annoy me.

Defending him has become decidedly more difficult after his Pacman decision, not because Pacman is an idiot (he is) or taking him back is risky (it is) or even because his coverage/special teams work has been ish at best (it has). What makes his love affair with Pacman so infuriating is because Owner Jones so obviously ignored the wishes of his football people, his coaches and his locker room by bringing him back.

They told him no, not in uncertain terms, not with any force. Most of them are puppets and thereby too afraid to drop the hammer. Owner Jones loves his weak coaches and, walking in, the Coach Wades of the world have to hope Owner Jones listens.

He didn’t with regards to Pacman, which is how this perpetual screw up finds himself welcomed back to Valley Ranch despite only Owner Jones and Tank wanting him.

Don’t agree. Did anybody hear Coach Wade on Thursday?

He sounded morose talking about Pacman’s return. And this from a man who has a way of making a playoff loss to the Giants seem like a victory. Players were only slightly better actors.

What bothers everybody is not that Pacman will get drunk, fight in a bathroom, and be a distraction. The problem is rather this idea that they need him at all.

    They don’t.

And the only person who doesn’t seem to know it is Owner Jones and he refuses to listen to anybody else. And that is indefensible. So let’s crack open another not-quite-weekly mailbag, the barefoot-and-pregnant edition.

Q: “I hear you talking about Your Boy Terrence Newman ‘shutting down’ Santana Moss. I just have one question for you. Did the Redskins ‘shut down’ TO? The last I checked they both only had 5 catches. But everyone is talking about how great Newman played. What about the Redskins DB's? I know you don’t have a rooting interest you’re in the media reporting on the game.” -- Lance Watler, Fort Worth

LBOH: Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner because T.O. did not have a good game, has not had one in a while. Be quiet about this fact since any inclusion of facts tends to anger his masses and his media apologists. He’s alright, just not a No. 1.

Q: “You’re an idiot. Hey, a woman’s place is in the home, barefoot and pregnant. McNeill doesn’t make a pimple on Muschamp’s (butt). (Another part of male anatomy) envy is a terrible thing. Sincerely … .” -- John Robert Pharr, Dallas

LBOH: Stay classy, John. Stay classy.

Q: “You’re being a bit hard on the Sooner (you really don’t like them). It’s not all about Texas’ victory on a neutral field, it’s about the SEASON. Look at what Texas scheduled vs OU for the non-conference (how many BCS-ranked teams did Texas play?) This is the Auburn argument all over again. You say it’s all about wins in the end. OK, let’s see how TTU does in Norman Saturday (Stoops is 59-2 there and OSU and the Frogs snuck up on them those two times).” -- Robert Schafer, the other side of the Metroplex

LBOH: Dearest Rob, I love SoonerNation and have been a longtime admirer of Stoops and I have seen a lot of his handiwork as a Mizzou grad. That said, I was at The Cotton Bowl back in October, watched Texas-OU with my own eyes and The Longhorns were better -- better coached, better QB, better defense that day and what has been decided on the field, let no pollster put asunder. Period.

Q: “Two things happened in the NHL recently that I’m against.

    1. The firing of Barry Melrose. If you’re going to bring the man out of retirement after so long, at least give him SOME time. He was obviously rusty. But I think this move was a bit premature.

    2. The Stars new alternate jerseys I think these are the worst jerseys the Stars have had since moving here (yes, even worse than the bull jerseys).

I guess it’s my turn to hate. Thanks for rocking.” -- James Price, Dallas
