Tony Romo, Jason Witten, Barry Church, Justin Durant and Dan Bailey are the Cowboys’ captains going into the season.
Romo and Witten were easy choices on the offensive side, of course, and Bailey has established himself as one of the better kickers in the game as the special teams’ captain.
As far as the defensive side, Church earned MVP honors last year and Durant has stepped up among the linebacker corps to take on the leadership void left by Sean Lee.
“When Sean Lee went down we were looking for someone to step up there or a group of guys to step up there and Justin’s really taken the bull by the horns and shown us that he needs to be the leader of that defense,” coach Jason Garrett said. “He’s very comfortable making calls, making adjustments and maybe more than anything else he does it with his play every day in practice. In the preseason games he brings it and again guys gravitate towards that and really respect that.”
Three of the five leaders, somewhat surprisingly, were undrafted players coming into the league -- Romo, Church and Bailey.
