Cowboys defensive notes: Carr, Melton, McClain

Cornerback Brandon Carr has caught up to game speed and is ready for the season opener on Sept. 7.
Carr reported to camp two weeks behind schedule to be with his ailing mother and needed to get more game action snaps in preparation for the season. He did just that by playing the first defensive series against the Broncos on Thursday night.
“It felt good to get a couple of plays under my belt,” Carr said. “I feel good going into next week’s home opener. Now it’s time to polish up the finished product and get ready for next Sunday.”
Among other notable defensive items from the opening half of Thursday’s game:• Linebacker Rolando McClain started at middle linebacker and played the opening two series. He had a team-high three tackles in the first half and had a nice pass rush play in which he knocked down Broncos quarterback Brock Osweiler.
• Defensive tackle Henry Melton was expected to get some snaps tonight, but did not play. He has not played since last September, when he suffered a season-ending ACL injury. Melton has recently been slowed by a groin injury, however, is expected to play in the season opener.
