The Cowboys released cornerback B.W. Webb on Thursday to make room for running back Phillip Tanner.
Webb, a fourth-round pick in 2013, has a hip flexor that would have prevented him playing in the preseason finale against the Broncos. He made 13 tackles and had one pass breakup in 15 games as a rookie.
Webb’s departure, and the four-game suspension of starter Orlando Scandrick, improves the odds of Tyler Patmon and Terrance Mitchell both making the roster for Week 1. Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne are slated to start, with Sterling Moore as the nickel back.
The Cowboys claimed Jemea Thomas off waivers from the Patriots on Wednesday to help them get through the preseason finale.
The signing of Tanner was done for the same reason. Dallas lacks depth at running back for tonight’s game with DeMarco Murray and Lance Dunbar expected to sit out for precautionary reasons and Joseph Randle (oblique) and Ryan Williams (groin) nursing injuries.
