The Cowboys claimed cornerback Jemea Thomas on waivers from the Patriots. New England released him Tuesday.
The Cowboys cut receiver Tim Benford to make room for Thomas.
Thomas was a sixth-round pick of the Patriots this year. He was a four-year starter at Georgia Tech, playing corner and safety. He made 13.5 tackles for loss, six sacks and nine interceptions.
Dallas was in need of cornerback help to get through the preseason finale Thursday night. Brandon Carr won’t play for precautionary reasons, and Morris Claiborne (shoulder), Sterling Moore (groin) and B.W. Webb (hip flexor) are nursing injuries. The team waived/injured cornerback Justin Green on Tuesday.
At one point in last Saturday night’s game against the Dolphins, the Cowboys were down to two cornerbacks.
Coach Jason Garrett said earlier this week he anticipates starter Orlando Scandrick playing some against the Broncos. Scandrick begins a four-game suspension Monday for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy.
