The latest news and notes about the Dallas Cowboys

In trimming their roster to 75, the Dallas Cowboys waived/injured safety Matt Johnson and released quarterback Caleb Hanie.

Johnson, a fourth-round pick in 2012, has never played in a regular-season NFL game. He’s had chronic hamstring injuries and once again had it derail him this season early on in training camp. The Cowboys finally gave up on him with this move.

Johnson will be placed on waivers, along with several more. Those with him on the waived/ injured list include TE Jordan Najvar; CB Justin Green; LB DeVonte Holloman; and CB Johnny Thomas.

The Cowboys have also waived WR Chris Boyd; P Tom Hornsey; LS Casey Kreiter; DE Adewale Ojomo; and G Wayne Tribue.

Additionally, the Cowboys placed DE Ben Gardner on the season-ending injured reserve, and DT Amobi Okoye on the non-football illness list. That means Okoye will miss at least half the season.
