Ronald Leary took every snap at left guard with the first-team offensive line during Saturday’s preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens. He clearly has the inside track of keeping his job from last year and holding off Mackenzy Bernadeau.

But coach Jason Garrett said that competition is still open.

“Ultimately, we’re going to look at the tape and say, ‘This guy is better than that guy,’” Garrett said. “The best guy deserves the first shot.”

Leary, who started all 16 games last year, has been taking a significant amount of reps with the first-team since returning to practice after suffering a hamstring injury during conditioning tests a couple days before training camp.

Garrett said Leary is still “a little behind,” but has seen progress.

“He’s getting better and better,” Garrett said. “His experience from last year has helped him and he’s become more and more decisive as a player. He needs to continue to get his feet up underneath him and catch up on his reps a little bit and we’ll give him plenty of chances to do that.”

Bernadeau, meanwhile, has received praise for his versatility among interior line spots.
