The latest news and notes about the Dallas Cowboys

DeMarcus Lawrence was expected to make an immediate impact as a rookie on the Dallas Cowboys’ defense.

The Cowboys traded up to the 34th overall pick to take Lawrence, who had a standout college career at Boise State. And Lawrence got off to a good first week of training camp before fracturing a bone in his right foot that has sidelined him for the past three weeks and will cost him at least another month.

Lawrence still needs crutches to get around and does not have a target date for his return. His next scheduled doctor’s appointment is Sept. 4 and more will be known at that point.

“It feels great, surgery went well,” Lawrence said. “I’m glad it happened now than later. Just going on a day-to-day basis with the treatment and getting that done so we can get back on the field.”

Asked if he takes comfort in knowing he’ll at least play this season, Lawrence said: “Correct. Knowing that I’m coming back soon, maybe in the next month or two, keeps my head high. I’ll be back.”

In the meantime, Lawrence said he’s focused on learning the playbook, so he is ready to go whenever he’s cleared.

Lawrence injured his foot during a one-on-one drill against left tackle Tyron Smith early in camp and said he immediately knew the diagnosis.

“Trying to rush the edge, bend the corner and went on the side of my foot wrong and it popped,” Lawrence said.
