Ryan Williams had two runs Saturday that showed why the Cardinals thought enough of him to make him the 38th overall pick in 2011. But he still faces an uphill battle to make the Cowboys’ roster.
Williams would have to beat out Joseph Randle or the Cowboys would have to keep four running backs to make the team’s 53. (Or they would have to have an injury to one of their top three running backs.)
On his weekly radio show on KRLD-FM, Owner Jerry Jones didn’t rule out making a spot for Williams.
"I don’t want to dismiss it," Jones said of keeping four running backs. "We’ve got these two preseason games to look at and the balance of these practices. Joe Randle right now is really playing outstanding. That’s not an exaggeration. What he is doing away from the ball with his blocking responsibilities is critical because when he is in there, he should be in there with [Tony] Romo, and we can’t have any miscues."
Williams finished with 36 yards and a touchdown on five carries It included a 27-yard run when he ran over Ravens safety Omar Brown and a 3-yard touchdown run.
Williams played in only five games in three seasons with the Cardinals because of injuries.
