Defensive tackle Henry Melton could be one of the only starters to play in the final preseason game against the Broncos. Coach Jason Garrett conceded Melton needs work and might not be ready for Saturday’s preseason game against the Dolphins, which traditionally is the starters’ final exhibition action.

“We would love to have him play,” Garrett said. “There’s no question about that. We’ll see what he’s able to do this week, and if he can play this week, we would love to have him out there. If not, I would anticipate him playing next week.”

Owner Jerry Jones has termed Melton’s groin injury a “week-to-week” injury as opposed to a “day-to-day” injury, and Garrett said Melton won’t return before the end of the week at the earliest.

Cornerbacks Brandon Carr, Morris Claiborne and Sterling Moore are closer than Melton to being full-go, Garrett said.

Carr missed most of training camp, getting to Oxnard on Aug. 9 after the death of his mother. The Cowboys have eased Carr back into full participation.

“Hopefully Carr will be ready to practice tomorrow and be ready to go,” Garrett said. “He had a good week getting his feet under him last week, so we anticipate him being in pads and practicing fully. Obviously we’ll monitor him as we go and make sure he’s able to handle the work.”

Claiborne, who injured his right shoulder, could practice later in the week. Moore, who returned to practice last week from a groin injury, should practice this week after missing the Ravens game.

Garrett added that defensive tackle Terrell McClain (high ankle) could return at the end of the week. McClain injured his ankle in the second padded practice, on July 27, and has been out since.

“We think McClain, hopefully by the end of the week, will be doing something for us,” Garrett said. “Again it’s a day-today thing, but he’s getting closer and closer.”
