Veteran Justin Durant isn’t getting too caught up in where he sits in the competition to replace Sean Lee at the middle linebacker spot.
Right now, Durant is being given every opportunity to win the job, working with the first team. But he knows that could change over the course of training camp.
Durant is among several candidates to fill the void, along with Rolando McClain, Anthony Hitchens and DeVonte Holloman.
“I know the other guys are hungry, so I just look at it as an open competition,” Durant said. “That’s how coach explained it to us and that’s just what it is. We’re all just trying to help each other get better and that’s just what it’s going to be.”
Durant said he isn’t going to put any added pressure on himself, but knows there are ways to separate himself from the group. That could start with his pass-coverage skills, which he admitted were “average to subpar” last season.
“I’m probably my worst critic,” Durant said. “I can be a lot better. I’ve gotten better already and I’m going to be better.”
