Dustin Vaughan loves ice cream. Correction, he loves Haagen-Dazs or Blue Bell or Sweet Firefly.
“I’m an ice cream snob,” the backup quarterback said.
He has yet to try McConnell’s Fine Ice Cream, a California ice cream chain, but plans to before he leaves town.
“I love ice cream,” Vaughan said. “It’s the one thing I can’t give up as far as like a health thing, when you get on a diet or have to give up something. I’ve been able to kind of dwindle it back a little bit and not eat as much, but it’s my weakness.”
Never miss a local story.
Here are Vaughan’s five favorite flavors:
1. “My very favorite is chocolate chip Haagen-Dazs.”
2. “Rocky Road.”
3. “Cookies and Cream.”
4. “Jamoca Almond Fudge.”
5. “Coffee Toffee from Sweet Firefly in Richardson.”
Officials have made defensive holding and illegal contact points of emphasis this season. The Cowboys heard NFL officials explain that last week, but seeing is believing.
In their first preseason game, the Cowboys were flagged for six defensive holds and one illegal contact. They also had one illegal use of hands.
That’s eight penalties on their defensive backs, though one was offsetting and three others were declined.
“If you look around the league, they called a ton of defensive holding penalties,” coach Jason Garrett said. “ What we have to do is understand how to play by these rules”
The first 13 preseason games of 2014, through Friday night, featured 44 defensive holding penalties and 21 illegal contact penalties, according to Pro Football Talk.
Cornerback Terrance Mitchell, a seventh-round draft pick from Oregon, recovered a fumble deep in the end zone during the first quarter, a play that happened to follow one of Mitchell’s holding penalties.
Mitchell said he happened to be in the right place at the right time for it and even thought about trying to take it out and go the distance. Instead, he accidentally stepped out of the back of the end zone for a touchback.
Could he have made it?
“Heck, yeah,” Mitchell said, smiling. “That’s why I tried to get up out of there, but the smart thing for the team is to get down so nothing happens.”
Safety Barry Church, who sat out with an injury, chuckled when asked about Mitchell’s “attempt” at a 109-yard return.
“Coach Garrett is going to tell him to get on the knee ASAP. He’s going to get chewed for that one,” Church said.
