Cowboys sign Caleb Hanie with Orton’s status cloudy

Dallas needed another arm in the off-season program with Kyle Orton absent and Tony Romo limited after back surgery.

The Dallas Cowboys signed quarterback Caleb Hanie to a one-year contract Wednesday, according to a source.

With backup quarterback Kyle Orton’s status in limbo, the Cowboys needed another arm for their off-season program. Starter Tony Romo is limited after coming off back surgery Dec. 27 to repair a herniated disk. The Cowboys covered themselves by signing veteran Brandon Weeden last month.

Orton surprised the team by skipping the voluntary workouts this week. That precipitated the Cowboys’ need for another quarterback, though they still hope Orton returns to back up Romo in 2014.

Hanie, 28, was born in Dallas and graduated from high school in Forney. He briefly was with the Cleveland Browns last season. He also has been a backup in Chicago and Denver, playing in 10 games with four starts.
