Cole Hamels was dominant and the Rangers piled up the runs to take the series finale for the sweep against the Astros 9-2 Sunday afternoon at Minute Maid Park.
Pitching: Hamels struck out a season-high and scattered five hits over eight innings. He allowed two runs but one was unearned. The lone earned run was a solo homer by Evan Gattis in sixth. Jason Castro reached on a fielding error by Hanser Alberto at second base and later scored on a groundout.
Hitting: The Rangers scored five in the third and kept tacking on against Astros pitchers. Texas added runs in the fourth, sixth and two more in the seventh on a two-run homer by Nomar Mazara. Mazara, Ryan Rua, Bobby Wilson and Ian Desmond each had two hits. In the third, doubles by Wilson and Beltre scored runs to help build a 5-0 lead. The Rangers collected four doubles and knocked Dallas Kuechel from the game after he allowed seven runs on nine hits in six innings.
Notable: Hamels’ 11 strikeouts are the second-most he’s had with the Rangers. He struck out 12 Mariners on Sept. 19 ... 35,035 was the announced attendance.
