The Opening Day excitement around Globe Life Park is apparent from afar. Tailgating fans by the thousands are lined up around various parking lots and the smell of charcoal is in the air.
We also have a baseball game today and it’s a good one.
Here are three things to watch as the Texas Rangers’ 2016 gets underway:
1) Two bona fide aces take the hill in Texas Rangers’ left-hander Cole Hamels and Mariners’ right-hander Felix Hernandez. Hernandez is making his eighth consecutive and ninth-career Opening Day start. Hamels is making his third and first for the Rangers.
2) Ian Desmond plays his first-career major league game in left field, and his second in the outfield (2009 for the Nationals). The former All-Star shortstop picked it up quickly during spring training despite struggling multiple times with balls in the sun. He’s hoping to have a bounce-back season after struggling at the plate in 2015 with the Nationals.
3) Second baseman Rougned Odor struggled so bad at the plate early in 2015 that he was sent to the minors in May. But when he came back in mid-June he was on fire and he stayed that for much of the rest of the season. Odor, 22, appears to be on the brink of stardom with a full year playing like he did last summer.
Game starts at 3:05 p.m. and will be broadcast on Fox Sports Southwest and ESPN.
