As he was eating breakfast, manager Ron Washington told Donnie Murphy that he’d be playing first base for the Texas Rangers today.
The team wanted to give Mitch Moreland a day off to rest his sore left ankle and a little bit of back stiffness he’s dealing with. Shin-Soo Choo is also getting a day off to rest his sore left ankle as Washington wanted to give them a little longer break with Monday’s off day.
That left Washington with few options to play first and he opted to go with Murphy. Murphy has never played the position before, but he and Washington planned to go through a brief workout there before first pitch.
“This is something new, but Wash just told me to catch the ball,” said Murphy, who is borrowing Chris Gimenez’s first base glove.
“I think it’s as simple as that.”
Murphy said the only issue he might have is on a groundball between the first baseman and second baseman and whether he should get it or let the second baseman.
