Left-hander Sam Freeman was called up from Triple A Round Rock on Wednesday, as Texas designated Stolmy Pimentel for assignment.
Freeman, a Lewisville native who played at Hebron High School, had given up a run in eight innings of relief for the Express this year. He was acquired by Texas in a trade from St. Louis at the end of spring training. Now, he gives the Rangers a second left-hander in the bullpen behind Alex Claudio, who has given up three home runs in nine relief appearances this year.
Freeman’s improvement against lefties was enough to earn the callup, Jeff Banister said.
“He’s seeing more consistency with ball-strike ratio against left-handers, which in spring training, it was the other way around,” Banister said. “The ball-strike ratio against right-handers was kind of the thing and the inconsistency was vs. the left-handers.”
Texas won’t hesitate to use Freeman, who compiled a 2.61 ERA in 44 appearances for St. Louis last year.
“We’ll give him an opportunity, and when necessary, he’ll be out there,” Banister said.
