Pitching: Nick Martinez didn’t pitch poorly, but for the first time he was unable to lead the Rangers to a win in his start. He was charged with four runs (two earned) on six hits in six innings. He got into trouble in the seventh when an error by Elvis Andrus at short allowed the lead-off man aboard. Two singles and a hit-batter followed, including Mark Canha’s sharply hit grounder which hit umpire Jerry Meals near second base. That thwarted a potential double play ball and the A’s turned it into a six-run inning, including a three-run homer by Josh Reddick off Anthony Bass.
Hitting: With two outs in the first, Prince Fielder and Adrian Beltre had opposite-field singles before Kyle Blanks’ double tied it at 1-1. Elvis Andrus’ one-out double in the third set up another run when Adrian Beltre drove him in with a two-out single to left to put the Rangers up 2-1. Shin-Soo Choo had Beltre and Blanks on base with two outs in the first and third but flew out hard to center. Blanks led off the sixth with his second homer in as many nights. Blanks had four hits, including a run-scoring single to center to make it 7-4 in the seventh. Choo followed with a three-run homer to right to tie it at 7-7. In the bottom of the 10th, Choo led off with a double against Ryan Cook before both Robinson Chirinos and Carlos Peguero, who were attempting to bunt Choo to third, walked to load the bases for Rougned Odor. Odor, facing R.J. Alvarez, hit a sharp grounder off the glove of shortstop Marcus Semien, who was playing in to score Choo with the game-winning run.
Notable: Jake Smolinsk’s single up the middle in the sixth was his first off a right-hander this season season. He started 0 for 19. Elvis Andrus’ seventh-inning fielding error was his sixth of the season, tied for fifth-most in the majors. Five of the six players ahead of tied with Andrus are also shortstops. In the seventh, Mark Canha’s sharply hit grounder towards second hit umpire Jerry Meals, thwarting a potential double play. Instead, Canha was credited with a single and the runner at second was ruled safe after it was ruled a dead ball.
