The Rangers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning but the Angels eventually burned starting pitching Ross Detwiler with a big fifth inning.
Pitching: Left-hander Ross Detwiler struggled with his command and it eventually hurt him big in the fifth. The Angels struck for four runs on three hits, including two homers, and two walks to take a 5-3 lead. Detwiler allowed five runs on eight hits and four walks in 5 2/3 innings. Stolmy Pimentel replaced Detwiler with two outs and two on in the sixth and after an infield single forced Albert Pujols to ground out to end the inning. Pimentel allowed a run on three hits in 2 1/3 innings. It was his first appearance for the Rangers.
Hitting: The Rangers jumped on starter Matt Shoemaker with three runs on four hits in the first inning, including a two-run double to the right-center gap by Mitch Moreland.
Notable: Left fielder Carlos Peguero didn’t take the straightest route but tracked down a sinking liner to his left for the second out in the third ... Monday’s announced paid attendance of 18,401 is the smallest crowd for a Globe Life Park game since July 2010. The smallest announced paid attendance in 2014 was 23,081.
