It’s a slow news day, at least as of 12:57 p.m., so it’s time to break out the baseball team prop bets courtesy of Bovada Online Casino.
The bookies have set the over/under on Texas Rangers victory in 2015 at 77 1/2, which would be fourth place in the American League West ahead of only Houston. That’s 10 1/2 more wins than the injury-ravaged Rangers won in 2014, but still 3 1/2 games below .500.
Whenever asked how the Rangers are going to do this year, I generally say around .500. So, I guess I’m going to take the over. By the end of the season, my two-month-old baby is going to need new shoes.
Here’s one way to come up with 81 Rangers wins, or at least more than 77 1/2:
Barring a repeat of the injury hell they went through last season, the Rangers are going to be better.
Derek Holland for six months rather than one month is going to be worth some additional Ws.
Yovani Gallardo in the rotation rather than Joe Saunders/Miles Mikolas/Robbie Ross/Phil Irwin will be worth some more wins.
Yu Darvish for six more weeks should be worth a win or two.
Even Colby Lewis will be better and could boost the win total.
Prince Fielder isn’t going to be as bad as he was while playing with one arm over the first six weeks of last season. There are a few more wins.
A rebound season for Shin-Soo Choo, who rated out with a 4.2 WAR in 2013 but a 0.1 WAR in 2014, should bump the win column. He should be a better player.
Those should be enough to get to 78 wins, even in light of the hole in left field, the uncertainty at designated hitter, and the questions in the bullpen.
Of course, I’m no bookie, though sometimes I like to think I am. Take my thoughts with a grain with a salt, and don’t bet the mortgage on them.
