There isn’t a whole lot of love between the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels as everyone saw this week. But that goes out the window Thursday night. The Rangers will be waving tiny little Angels flags, at least for one night.
Texas can clinch at least a tie for the American League West Thursday night if the Houston Astros lose to the Angels at Minute Maid Park.
2 Magic number for Rangers to clinch the American League West title.
The Rangers, who lead the Astros by 8 1/2 games in the West have a magic number of two, meaning any combination of Rangers’ wins and Astros’ losses equaling two gives the Rangers the title.
The Rangers begin a three-game series in Oakland Friday night and then return home for three against the Milwaukee Brewers and three against the Tampa Bay Rays Sept. 30-Oct. 2 to conclude the regular season. If the Astros lose Thursday night the magic number drops to one and no matter what the Astros do earlier Friday evening the Rangers can wrap up the title with a win in Oakland.
The Astros have 10 games remaining, including tonight’s first of seven against the Angels. The Astros have done to the Angels what the Rangers did to the Astros this season, they dominated the series. Houston has won 11 of the first 12 meetings. The Astros are 10-6 against the Mariners, who they host for three beginning Monday. Houston still has a great chance to earn one of two wild card spots. The Astros and Tigers are a game behind the Orioles for the second spot and two behind the Blue Jays.
