Hurting Rios gives thumbs-up to play in Rangers’ series finale

The right thumb of right fielder Alex Rios was swollen and bruised Wednesday morning, but he was still in the Rangers’ lineup for the series finale at Marlins Park.

“It looked worse yesterday, I can tell you that,” he said.

Rios has fallen apart physically in the second half, with a sprained right ankle in the first series after the All-Star break and the thumb he jammed two weeks ago at Chicago.

But he has avoided the disabled list and continues to play. Even though he was a late scratch Tuesday, he entered the game as part of a ninth-inning double-switch.

The thumb hurts most when he is jammed on a pitch.

“Hopefully, I hit the ball on the barrel,” he said. “If not, what can I do?”

Rios responded by going 2 for 4 Wednesday with a two-run double in the second inning.
