Rangers put ace Yu Darvish on DL with sore elbow

The right-hander first felt discomfort Monday while playing catch two days after his most recent start.

Right-hander Yu Darvish has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with elbow inflammation after feeling tightness Monday while playing catch.

The move is retroactive to Sunday, but Darvish will miss at least two starts. That includes his scheduled start Thursday, which now goes to left-hander Robbie Ross.

Ross will be added to the roster Thursday after being recalled from Triple A Round Rock. Lefty Alex Claudio had his contract purchased from Round Rock.

Darvish threw 113 pitches in four innings Saturday at Houston, but said that he didn’t feel any discomfort for two days. He did not throw a between-starts bullpen session.

Darvish (10-7, 3.06 ERA) is on the DL for the second time this season after opening the year there because of neck stiffness. He also was scratched from a May start at Minnesota by neck stiffness but started days later at Washington.

The Rangers have now used the DL 24 times this season, the most in the majors, and have a MLB-leading 14 players on the DL. Claudio would become the Rangers’ club-record 56th different player this season and 17th rookie, which lead the majors, and the club-record 34th pitcher.
