Jake Smolinski didn’t have the best start to his big-league career, striking out three times in his first four plate appearances.

But in his first major-league start on Tuesday, Smolinski collected the first two hits of his career, including an RBI double.

“It feels awesome, but it’s a strange feeling and trying to explain it is difficult,” Smolinski said. “I might engrave the ball or write something on it like the date and pitcher’s name, but I don’t have a spot for it yet at home.”

Smolinski will make his second start on Wednesday and moves up in the order, from eighth to fifth, against Houston lefty Dallas Keuchel (8-5, 3.06 ERA).

“I'm excited, but as for where I’m at in the order, it doesn’t really matter to me. The game situation will tell me what I need to do when I’m in the box,” he said. “To me, it’s about competing. The ball is still going to cross the plate, no matter who’s throwing it to you.”
