Ron Washington said Chris Gimenez, recently recalled from Triple-A Round Rock, will be behind the plate for Yu Darvish today in Detroit and, in all likelihood, will be the ace’s designated catcher.
Darvish’s regular catcher, J.P. Arencibia, was sent down to Triple A on Tuesday after a season full of struggles.
“I just want to be on the same page,” said Gimenez, who met with Darvish and his translator on Tuesday. “Getting up to speed on what he likes to do.
“We’ll do some homework on the plane” to Detroit.
Never miss a local story.
Gimenez saw his first action with the Rangers on Wednesday, going 0-for-3 with a walk. Gimenez has played in 143 major-league games with Cleveland, Seattle and, most recently, Tampa Bay.
