A day after sending Yu Darvish to the earliest exit in his career, the Oakland A’s followed it up by giving Martin Perez his biggest pounding yet.
The A’s tagged the Rangers best starter to date for eight runs in 4 2/3 innings en route to a 9-3 victory on Tuesday night.
Oakland will try to complete a three-game sweep over Texas on Wednesday night.
Perez entered the game as one of the hottest pitchers in the game, tossing consecutive complete-game shutouts and having a 26-inning scoreless streak.
That streak ended quickly, though, when the A’s took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Derek Norris had a two-out, two-run single off Perez.
The A’s scored single runs in the second and third to take a 4-0 lead. The Rangers got a run back in the fourth inning, but the A’s blew it open with five runs in the fifth.
Perez loaded the bases with one out, but got Norris to popup for the second out. But he gifted the A’s a run by walking in a run to end his night.
Jason Frasor couldn’t bail him out of the inning, either. Frasor gave away another run by walking the first batter he faced, pinch-hitter Brandon Moss, and then served up a two-run single to Josh Reddick. Moss later scored on a wild pitch by Frasor.
Perez was charged with four of the five runs scored in the fifth, and saw his ERA more than double from 1.42 to 2.95. The eight earned runs allowed by Perez were a career-high.
The eight-run deficit, meanwhile, was too great for the offense to overcome. The lone highlight came on an RBI single by Prince Fielder, who beat Oakland’s defensive shift by slicing a single to leftfield in the fifth inning.
