Rangers spring break: Elvis Andrus calls DFW home

Rangers shortstop shares his three favorite things about living in the area.

Home sweet home

Elvis Andrus is calling Dallas/Fort Worth his permanent home. He bought a house in the Dallas area and spent the majority of the off-season in Texas rather than his native Venezuela. Even though most don’t consider Texas a winter climate, it was to Andrus, which is partly why he grew his Abraham Lincoln-esque beard.

Andrus, 25, said there are several reasons he put down roots in the area. His top three:

• The people: “DFW people are pretty cool. They’re down to earth, just enjoy being here and have a lot of pride. That’s cool when you have pride for your city and state.”

• The restaurants: “So many amazing restaurants close by. My favorite is probably Ocean Prime [in Dallas]. They’ve got everything, really nice steaks and a really good selection of wine.”

• His North Dallas neighborhood: “It’s pretty sweet. They’ve got everything and it’s close to a lot of restaurants and things to do like Top Golf. Top Golf is a great place to spend time with your family and it’s a place where my mom can play, my stepdad, my niece, my girlfriend. They play pretty good music and I was hitting it really well there.”

Telling number

74 Career saves by 25-year-old Neftali Feliz, who is scheduled to make his eighth appearance of the spring Friday.

He said it

“It’s not that we’re working against one another in the sense that it’s a cut-throat thing. We’re out there working hard and both of us are trying to put our best foot forward. We’re not going out there trying to out-beat the other one, we’re just going out there trying to win spots.” — Robbie Ross on competing for a rotation spot with Tanner Scheppers

Words of Wash

“I heard it, but I didn’t see it. I saw him hit it, but I didn’t see the ball. I didn’t see where the son of a buck landed. He smoked that ball.” — on Prince Fielder’s second home run of the spring, a solo shot in the fifth inning off Reds right-hander Sam LeCure
