Adrian Beltre ran outside Monday, his first time since exiting last Thursday’s game with a mild left quad strain. He expects to return to the lineup Thursday.
“I didn’t run 100 percent, but good enough to know where I’m at and know it’s better,” Beltre said. “I thought of playing today, but the medical staff said they’d rather me wait until Thursday.”
Beltre has dealt with hamstring issues the past few seasons and said it’s tough to compare those to his quad injury. He also didn’t think this latest setback would require him to get additional at-bats during minor league games.
Beltre has batted .217 with no home runs and two RBIs through 10 Cactus League games.
“I don’t feel like I want to feel, but I feel good enough to know what I have to do,” Beltre said. “If the season started tomorrow, I’d be ready. Just turn the switch on.”
Briefly• Right-hander Tommy Hanson threw 81 pitches over 4 2/3 innings in a minor-league start against Triple A Tacoma on Monday. He allowed three runs on six hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
• The Phillies announced that Cliff Lee would be their Opening Day starter followed by A.J. Burnett and Kyle Kendrick. Yu Darvish will square off against Lee on March 31, but the rest of the rotation remains to be set.
• Three utility infield candidates remain in camp – Brent Lillibridge, Adam Rosales and Josh Wilson. Washington wasn’t ready to handicap that competition, though.
