Tanner Scheppers admits he’s in a difficult spot. He’d like to start, but also knows the closer role is open at this point.

For now, Scheppers is being viewed as a rotation candidate but could certainly find himself in the battle for the closing role by the end of spring.

“It’s kind of a funny situation to be in, but that’s something out of the players’ control,” said Scheppers, who will make his second spring start Saturday against the Dodgers.

“That’s up to skip and management. I just know I enjoy pitching and want to do a lot more of it, or be in a more prominent role. Not taking anything away from the setup role.”

Scheppers, along with the other pitchers in camp, will know what role the team feels their best suited for on March 19, manager Ron Washington said.

“If we decide we have a starter in there that we want to move out and put in the bullpen, he has time to get in bullpen mode,” Washington said.

Scheppers emerged as a reliable setup reliever last season, going 6-2 with a 1.88 ERA over 76 appearances. The 76 appearances were the most by a Rangers reliever and tied for third-most in the league.
