Miles of facial hair
Rangers right-hander Miles Mikolas has different ways of standing out from the crowd of players trying make an impression in big league camp.
And they’re not all mound-related. The avid fisherman from Florida has been known to eat live lizards (search crunchy lizard snack on youtube.com).
But mostly, so far, it’s Mikolas’ mustache that has made him stand out. Even in a clubhouse with multiple facial hair-enhanced players, Mikolas stands out with the ’70s-style ’stache.
Never miss a local story.
“I’m a big Tom Selleck fan,” Mikolas said. “Mr. Baseball, obviously. He had a great mustache.”
He’s too young to remember that Selleck’s iconic mustache first made the scene on television’s Magnum, P.I. in 1980.
His fiancée isn’t a big fan of the look, mainly because it tickles. But he’s sticking with it, especially because he says it takes such a long time to grow.
“It can get creepy at times, but baseball guys usually look down and tend to favor the mustache,” he said. “There is some great facial hair in this locker room, some great beards, goatees. Mine doesn’t fill in all the way so I usually end up showing the mustache. I like to throw in some dark brown Just For Men. It takes a little bit of the red out of it.”

He said it
“Obviously, they traded for me so they see something they liked. I’m a little disappointed in myself, obviously, to come to camp and be a little banged up and not get to show them my stuff. But, hopefully I get out there on the mound soon enough to be able to get into some games and show them what I’m made of.” — Pitcher Miles Mikolas, who came to the Rangers in a trade from Pittsburgh on Dec. 30.
Word from Wash
“Only on two fields today, too wet. The ones in the back are terrible. They did a good job on these two so we’ll all be clogging on two fields. Should be easy. Did 11 years in Oakland on one and a half.” — Rangers manager Ron Washington on the team practicing on just two dry fields Sunday after heavy rains fell Saturday.
