Jose Contreras is looking to become the second oldest player in Texas Rangers history.
The veteran right-hander turns 42 today and will try to make the 2014 club after Thursday signing a minor-league contract with an invitation to big league camp.
The Rangers also announced they signed right-hander Nate Adcock and outfielder Bryan Petersen to minor-league deals with invites to camp.
Contreras had one stint in the big leagues last season, pitching five innings of relief for the Pittsburgh Pirates in May. He also spent time in the Red Sox organization after missing the early part of the season rehabbing from Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery he had in June 2012.
The Cuba native has a career record of 78-67 with a 4.57 ERA over 299 games, including 175 starts. He might be best known for his 2005-06 seasons with the Chicago White Sox. He helped them win the World Series in ’05 and made the American League All-Star team in ’06.
Contreras has pitched in a relief role since 2010 and would be second only to Nolan Ryan among oldest players in club history, if he makes the team.
Adcock, 25, had stints in the big leagues in 2011-12 with Kansas City and split last season with the Royals and Diamondbacks organizations.
Petersen, 27, spent last season with the Marlins’ Triple A affiliate. He made his big-league debut with Miami in 2010 and appeared with the Marlins each of the next three seasons.
Mark McLemore will be in the Texas Rangers’ TV booth more often this season, the team announced Thursday.
Tom Grieve will remain the team’s primary analyst, but McLemore is expected to call approximately 25 home and road games this season.
Steve Busby will return for his second full season as the TV play-by-play announcer.
