The Texas Rangers are going back to the Alamodome for exhibition baseball.
The team announced that it will play the Houston Astros in a pair of games March 28-29 in San Antonio in what’s being billed as H-E-B Big League Weekend.
The Rangers and Padres played two exhibition games at the Alamodome last March, the first time the venue has hosted a baseball event and drew more than 75,000 fans over the two days.
The March 28 game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., and the March 29 game will start at 1:05 p.m. Two-game ticket packages go on sale at 10 a.m. Nov. 15 and single-game tickets will be available on Dec. 2.

The two-game series is hosted by Ryan-Sanders Baseball, which owns the Rangers’ Triple A affiliate in Round Rock. Astros president of business operations Reid Ryan, son of former Rangers executive Nolan Ryan, announced the event, along with Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow and manager Bo Porter, on Friday in San Antonio.
“The Rangers are very happy to be returning to San Antonio and Big League Weekend in 2014,” Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said in a statement. “Ryan-Sanders Baseball put on a first-class event in 2013 and did an amazing job in converting the Alamodome into a Major League Baseball facility. The reception we received playing before the tremendous fans of the San Antonio area was outstanding and we look forward to another great series.”
To turn the Alamodome into a baseball facility last year required AstroTurf to build a 133,000-square-foot custom field for the floor, as well as 300 cubic yards of dirt to fill the base around the infield. The overall project took almost three weeks to complete, which included custom dugouts, bullpens, netting and walls. This year, they expect the transformation to require only three days.
“We couldn’t be happier with the way the first year turned out,” Ryan-Sanders CEO Reese Ryan said in a statement. “Our goal has always been to promote the game of baseball and we’re very appreciative of our partners with the city and also the San Antonio Missions.”
The Rangers will open the 2014 regular season against the Philadelphia Phillies at Rangers Ballpark on March 31.
