What better way to spend a Tuesday night than watching two rivals on the volleyball court - that’s what went on at Burleson as the Elks took on Burleson Centennial - both 3-0 in District 9-5A.
The Spartans edged out the Elks 25-23, 22-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-10 to remain perfect in district play.
Marissa Thompson had a team-high 13 kills for Centennial (16-14, 4-0 in 9-5A) and Laken Cash added 12 kills. Ady Mize had nine kills and Carissa Pauda added eight.
Jeanette McGrath recorded 18 digs and five aces, and Kara Moretz had 35 assists and 11 digs.
The Spartans play Crowley on Friday and Granbury, which is also 4-0, on Sept. 27.
Boswell sweeps Northwest
Saginaw Boswell, ranked No. 7 in the state this week in Class 5A, has swept two of its biggest games of the season in the past two matches.
The Pioneers (21-8, 4-0 in 6-5A) has swept state-ranked teams Aledo and Justin Northwest in back-to-back matches.
Boswell beat Northwest 25-18, 25-15, 25-11 on Tuesday night.
Kailyn Gilbreath, a UTA commit, led Boswell with 17 kills while Emily Ah Leong added 12. Kylie Courtney had 40 assists and Michigan commit Natalie Smith had 22 digs.
The Texans (21-10, 2-2) got nine kills and 10 digs from Camryn Berryhill; 18 assists and 14 digs from Analise Lucio; and 15 and 12 digs from Lexi Ihrig and Oakley O’Dell.
Keller stays perfect
Keller stayed perfect in District 3-6A with a 25-27, 25-22, 25-20, 25-6 over Keller Central.
The Indians are now 19-13 overall and 3-0 in district play.
Keller is at Weatherford (3-0) on Friday in a battle of first place teams.
Another perfect district team is Fort Worth Paschal after the Panthers defeated North Crowley 25-18, 25-19, 25-18.
Katie Nance had a game-high 22 kills; Kendal King had nine kills and five blocks; and Riley Parker added 15 digs and six kills.
The Panthers (21-7, 4-0 in 4-6A) face 3-1 Arlington on Friday before visiting Arlington Lamar, which is also 4-0 on Sept. 27.
Western Hills, Arlington Heights ranked
Fort Worth Western Hills and Arlington Heights entered the state ranks this week for the first time this season. Both are tied for 25th in the TGCA Class 5A poll.
Western Hills outlasted South Hills in five sets and Arlington Heights beat North Side in four. Both teams along with Trimble Tech improved to 4-0 in District 7-5A.
Trimble Tech plays Arlington Heights on Friday and Heights plays Western Hills on Sept. 27.
Byron Nelson improved to 23-9 overall and 4-0 in District 5-6A with a sweep over Lewisville.
Sanaa Barnes had a game-high 11 kills with a .524 hitting percentage. Kelli McKinnon had eight kills and seven digs and Paige Flickinger added nine digs, six kills and five aces. Meredith Fusselman had a game-high 30 assists.
The Bobcats face defending 6A state champ Hebron on Friday and Southlake Carroll, which is also 4-0, on Sept. 27.
Area teams that remain undefeated in district play: Weatherford, Keller, Paschal, Lamar, Carroll, Nelson, Boswell, Western Hills, Arlington Heights, Trimble Tech, Colleyville Heritage, Grapevine, Granbury, Burleson Centennial and Waxahachie.
Springtown is 4-0 in 7-4A, and Midlothian Heritage and Glen Rose are both 3-0 in 8-4A.
