Seven players on the UTA softball roster for 2017 are from area teams. Another five, at least, are committed to play for the Mavs.
Colleyville Heritage junior shortstop Maggie Black became the fifth after she made her announcement on Wednesday.
Black, who plays select ball on Texas Glory Adkins, batted .358 in 20 games this past season for the Panthers. She led the team with four home runs and six triples, and added four doubles and 21 RBIs (tied for second on the team).
“I decided with UTA because I could really and truly see myself there,” Black said. “A big thing though is I got to see how competitive coach [Kristie] Fox makes this program and that's really something I wanted to be apart of.”
Black homered once in Heritage’s bi-district match with Midlothian.
Current area players at UTA: Krista Rude (Martin), Mallory Foster (Burleson), Calin Sims (Grapevine), Reagan Wright (Legacy), Avery Grimes (Timber Creek), Mariah Denson (Timberview) and Sam Montes (Burleson).
Others committed include Sydney Friend (Burleson Centennial), Paxton Scheurer (Mansfield), Ashleigh Sgambelluri (Arlington Heights) and Mackenzie Denson (Lake Ridge).
“I didn't really know many girls already committed, but a couple weeks back I went to a camp and all the girls felt like long lost best friends - they're awesome,” Black said.
