It was another exciting weekend for volleyball tournaments around the state.
Aledo once again showed its dominance, finishing second overall at the Northwest ISD Classic. The three-day event took place at Northwest, Byron Nelson and Eaton High School and showcased 59 teams across Texas.
The Bearcats, which finished third in the Pearland tournament last weekend, entered Saturday’s Gold bracket championships a perfect 6-0. First up was Highland Park and with nine kills from Oregon State commit Maddie Goings and 17 assists from Erin Weiss, Aledo won 25-17, 25-18.
Waxahachie was next in the semifinals. The Indians won last weekend’s Mansfield ISD Sunrise tournament and were ranked No. 4 in the state by the TGCA.

In a thrilling back-and-forth Set 1, Aledo won 25-23 then took down Set 2 25-20. Goings led the Bearcats again with eight kills and Weiss put in 18 assists. Audrey Nalls (10 kills) and Taylor Stoops (23 assists) led Waxahachie.
Midway would finally stop Aledo’s run, winning the title match 25-23, 25-19. Goings had 15 kills and Weiss added 11 assists. The Bearcats are now 13-3 on the season while head coach Kathy Goings is up to 625 career wins.
Grapevine, Southlake Carroll and Byron Nelson were also in the Gold bracket. Carroll would defeat Grapevine in three sets for fifth place. Goings and Emily Smith from Aledo were among those that made the all-tourney team.
In other brackets, Keller beat J.J. Pearce and Denton for the Ruby title; Colleyville Heritage defeated Boswell 25-22, 25-16 in the Silver (Boswell went 3-0 on Day 1 Thursday, beating Burleson, Mansfield and Carroll). Northwest, which beat Arlington Lamar on Tuesday, got past the Vikings again 2-1 on Saturday. The Texans finished fourth in the Bronze bracket.
At Granbury High School on Saturday, the host Pirates finished runner up to Peaster in Gold while Mansfield Timberview (Silver) and Keller Fossil Ridge (Bronze) won their brackets. Overall, 24 teams competed. Among those on the all-tourney team included Central Arkansas commit Amari Mitchell (Timberview), Audrey Pendergraft (Fossil Ridge) and Hannah Grant (Fossil Ridge). The Pirates went 7-2, pushing coach Tammy Clark’s career win total to 319.

In White Settlement, Keller Timber Creek rode the wave all the way to the title match, falling to Boyd in three sets. In total, 20 teams competed. Saginaw finished fourth while the host Bears went fifth and Godley ended in seventh.

A champion among area teams as host Arlington Sam Houston won its tournament over the weekend. On a side note, Texans head coach Theresa Frederick earned her 450th career win during Tuesday’s sweep over FW Southwest.
