Grapevine scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning and held on for a 7-2 baseball victory Friday over Canyon at Hoskins Field in the opener of a Class 5A regional semifinal series in Wichita Falls.
The series resumes at noon Saturday for Game 2, with a deciding Game 3 played 30 minutes after, if necessary.
Starting pitcher Kyle Flamm (6-1) gave up just one earned run and nine hits and struck out four.
Ty Jones was 2 for 3 with a run scored and two RBIs. His single to center field scored Boone Montgomery to start a rally of insurance runs for the Mustangs (30-5-2) in the fifth inning.

Paul McCullough was 3 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI and James Wyche was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI for Grapevine.
Tristen Hefner pitched 4 2/3 innings for Canyon (29-8), giving up four earned runs and seven hits in the loss.
Kason Haggard was 1 for 3 with an RBI and Tommy Williams was 2 for 4 for the Eagles.
Amarillo 4-3, Keller 3-0
The Indians won Game 1 late Thursday night, but their offense never woke up Friday as the Sandies (28-14) swept a twinbill at Abilene Christian to earn a berth in the Class 6A Region I finals.
Amarillo will face either Coppell or Midland Lee next week.
The Sandies’ Avery Beller was masterful in the deciding game, scattering eights hits and striking out two to get the complete-game win.
Max Marusak was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and Skyler Nelson was 2 for 3 with two RBIs for Amarillo.
Nelson was 5 for 8, with a run scored and three RBIs in the series.
Keller (27-10) stranded eight runners in the loss, with Shea Langeliers going 3 for 3 and Matt Cavanaugh 2 for 3 at the plate.
Corbin Bozosi went 4 2/3 for the Indians, giving up three earned runs on five hits and striking out six.
In Game 2, starting pitcher Mason Whitmarsh gave up four earned runs in the first inning and Keller couldn’t complete the comeback.
The Indians got a run in the third inning and two in the sixth, but couldn’t do anything with Cavanaugh’s leadoff single in the seventh.
Mason Mays picked up the win for Amarillo, giving up three earned runs and eight hits and striking out three.
Argyle 7, Paris North Lamar 1
Brett Lundy gave up an unearned run and scattered seven hits as the Eagles (26-5) won the opener in a Class 4A Region I semifinal series.
Tanner Boyzuick was 2 for 3 with four RBIs, including a triple, and Austin King was 2 for 3 with a solo homer and an RBI single.
Lake Dallas 6, Lubbock Cooper 4
The Falcons (25-10) scored four runs in the top of the seventh and Grant Landry picked up the save over Coooper (31-5) in Game 1 of a Class 5A Region I semifinal series in Abilene.
Ty Behringer was 2 for 4 with a run scored and two RBIs and Logan Cowart was also 2 for 4 with two RBIs.
Brock 10, Peaster 0
Mattye Tyler and the Eagles (36-3) needed just five innings to shut out Peaster and earn a berth in the state tournament for the first time since 2010.
Tyler allowed just one hit and struck out two and the offense scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning.
An RBI single for Tyler scored Cara Tolar and Lauren Lightfoot hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Madison Hernandez in the that four-run stretch.
Tolar finished with three RBIs and Snow went 2 for 3 with three runs scored.
Birdville 3, Canyon 0
Freshman Grace Green lost a no-hitter in the bottom of the seventh, but completed the shutout as Birdville (27-10) took Game 1 of a Class 5A Region I final series at Midwestern State.
Green (15-4), who struck out 13 batters, gave up her first two hits in the seventh with one out when Canyon (30-7) looked to rally.
In the top of the fourth, Maygan Paul had a one-out single and scored on one of Canyon's three errors for a 1-0 lead. Elena Garcia made it 2-0 in the fifth with an RBI single to center and McKenna Moore scored on a pass ball in the seventh.
