Madison Goings registered 17 kills as Aledo swept Lake Dallas 25-17, 25-17, 25-11 in the Class 5A Region I volleyball quarterfinals Tuesday night at Northwest ISD gymnasium.
Aledo will play the winner of the Canyon-Canyon Randall match on Friday at Kimbrell Arena on the McMurry University campus in Abilene. The Region I championship match will be held Saturday.
The Bearcats (39-7) jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Lake Dallas (31-12) inched its way back to take an 8-7 lead and extend its advantage to 12-10 a few serves later. But Aledo then forced the Falcons into a series of costly mistakes.
Eleven of the Bearcats’ final 13 points in the first set came on return errors. Goings and Madison Lopez had a kill apiece during that stretch.
In the second set, Aledo came out on the offensive, scoring 21 points on kills, eight by Goings.
The Bearcats breezed through the third set, at one point leading 13-3.
Lopez complemented Goings with a strong match of her own, tallying nine kills. The senior outside hitter also started the first set with three aces. Her opening serves also led to three kills and a block.
Aledo coach Kathy Goings said her team’s ball movement improved in the final two sets, leading to the Bearcats’ third sweep of the playoffs. Aledo previously beat Fort Worth Trimble Tech and Wichita Falls Rider.
“I really like that we were able to pass better and run our offense and kind of wear them down a little bit,” Kathy Goings said. “We were serving them aggressive, so they were getting put out because they weren’t able feed their top hitter.”
