Keller Fossil Ridge running back Keyshawn Mitchell ran for four touchdowns and teammate Cameron Castleberry caught two touchdown passes as the Panthers beat Tyler Lee 48-26 on Saturday at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.
The season opener concluded the four-game Trinity Mother Frances Classic, which started Thursday.
Mitchell rushed for 157 yards on 25 carries, with scoring runs of 1, 11, 42 and 5 yards. His second and third touchdowns came in the fourth quarter when Fossil Ridge (1-0) built a 41-19 lead midway through the final frame.
Castleberry had TD receptions of 15 and 40 yards. He finished with five catches for 84 yards. Junior quarterback Bryce Baccarini had 98 passing yards and two TDs.
Lee (0-1) cut the deficit to 41-26 on a Juwan Banks’ 1-yard run with 2:35 left, but Fossil Ridge wideout Dylan Neuse returned Lee’s onside kick 45 yards to the 5. Mitchell added his final touchdown on the next play.
Fossil Ridge built a 27-12 halftime lead, mostly by capitalizing on Lee miscues.
A high snap on a Lee punt resulted in a 21-yard loss, and Castleberry scored three plays later on a 15-yard catch.
Lee’s next punt didn’t cross midfield, then after pass interference in the end zone on third-and-12, Mitchell scored two plays later for a 14-0 lead with 2:35 left in the first quarter.
The Red Raiders cut the first-half deficit to 14-12, but Cody Seidel’s 42-yard field goal gave the Panthers a 17-12 lead with 4:48 left in the second quarter. Castleberry caught his second TD pass less than three minutes later, and Seidel added a 33-yard field goal on the final play of the half.
