Tristen Wallace passed for four touchdowns and rushed for three to lead DeSoto to a 55-30 victory against Arlington Martin in the season opener Friday night at Midlothian ISD Multi-Purpose Stadium.
The Eagles (1-0) knocked the Warriors (0-1) out of the playoffs last season at the same stadium.
Wallace, a junior, passed for 287 yards and rushed for 221, and played only two series in the second half.
DeSoto’s quick-strike offense scored six times in the first half, several times providing a quick response to Martin scores. Wallace threw touchdown passes of 54 and 17 yards in the first quarter. His 5-yard run early in the second gave the Eagles a 21-6 lead.
A 20-yard touchdown run by Jalum Bouldin drew Martin to within seven points. But Wallace scampered 76 yards on the first play of the ensuing Eagles drive to extend the lead to 28-14.
Nic Smith’s 7-yard touchdown run with 1:32 left in the second quarter cut the DeSoto lead to 11, but Wallace needed little time to lead the Eagles down the field once more. His 34-yard scoring strike to Kevin Thomas gave DeSoto a 42-23 advantage in the final minute of the first half.
Thomas finished with three catches for 131 yards and three touchdowns. He also caught a two-point conversion throw from Wallace in the second quarter.
Wallace capped off his night with an 9-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
The Warriors were led offensively by Bouldin and Smith, who combined to rush for 194 yards and three touchdowns.
