Keller Timber Creek running back Amon Lindsey scored two touchdowns on two carries, but his All-Star teammates couldn’t hold off a late rally as the East beat the West 31-28 in overtime Saturday night in the North Texas Bowl/DFW East-West Classic at Pennington Field in Bedford.
Ferris’ Miguel Mendiola hit a 31-yard field goal to win the game after the West missed a field-goal attempt in its first overtime possession.
Lindsey had put the West ahead 28-20 with a winding 13-yard touchdown run with 9:05 left in the game. But the East marched down the field on the ensuing possession, capping an 80-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown pass from Frisco’s Jake Battaglia to Dallas Madison’s Keith Jackson with 41 seconds left. The score came on fourth-and-goal from the 3-yard line.
That was followed by a 2-point conversion pass from Duncanville’s Jeremiah Drake to Frisco Lone Star’s Michael Bordes to tie the game at 28-28.
Lindsey’s 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter put his team ahead 21-14, but it was his second score that was the highlight of the night for the West. Lindsey originally went left but ran into a cluster of defenders before redirecting his route to the far side of the field, losing ground before finding an opening on the right edge and barreling in for a touchdown.
West’s Raekwan Neal, a Fort Worth Western Hills product, scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to even the game at 7-7 with 5:26 left in the first quarter.
West took a 14-7 lead on the first play of the second quarter when Waco’s O.C. Beasley, the game’s defensive MVP, returned a fumble 51 yards for a touchdown. But the East responded near halftime with a 5-yard touchdown run from Drake.
