The North Texas East-West Classic will be played at 7 p.m. Saturday at Pennington Field in Bedford.
The annual high school football all-star game has been played since 2011 and matches seniors from across the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
The game is put on by North American All-Stars, a group that runs local all-star games across the state.
The West roster for Saturday’s game includes Aledo offensive lineman Corbin Bullington, Euless Trinity wide receiver Edrick Gonzalez and Fort Worth Dunbar defensive back Stepfawn Hughes.
Burleson, Grapevine, Saginaw Boswell, Fort Worth Arlington Heights, Hurst Bell, Keller Timber Creek, Justin Northwest and Fort Worth Southwest are also among area schools with players on the West roster.
Gary McElroy, who led Burleson to the playoffs last year after the school went winless in 2012, will coach the West.
McElroy said one of the qualifications for making the team was being named all-district. But even working with a talented group of players could be challenging when most of them haven’t done much football-related activities since last fall.
“That’s been our biggest topic of conversation around here, getting ready for practice, how exactly are we going to approach this?” McElroy said. “We’re going to spend a lot of time teaching and installing the offense.”
Still, McElroy said he’s excited to coach his first all-star game, which included two-hour practices this week leading into Saturday.
“It’s not often you get a hand-picked football team,” he said. “You’re looking at all the players holding district honors at some level. It’s kind of the cream of the crop.”
The East team will be coached by Ferris’ Aaron Emeyabbi.
