Aledo used a five-run fourth inning and held off scrappy Trophy Club Nelson for a 7-5 victory Friday night, giving the Bearcats a sweep in their Class 4A Region I area-round series.
“Throw out Game 1 anytime there’s a Game 2, because the team that didn’t happen to win Game 1 will fight their guts out. [Nelson] played their hearts out,” Aledo coach Jeff Lemons said.
Aledo won Game 1 Thursday night 12-2. The Bearcats (24-4) got off to a fast start in Game 2. Haylee Bowden led off the game with a base hit and came home on Alex Cook’s single.
Nelson (17-14) answered Aledo’s early run. Jacey Allen’s bloop single to right field allowed Angel Szymanski to cross home and tie the score at 1-1.
Cook knocked in another run in the Ladycats’ third to make it 2-1.
An inning later, the Aledo offense erupted. Tori Gore started the scoring with a single that plated Riley Sartain. One batter later, Allie Ramsey’s sacrifice fly sent Kadyn Kirkpatrick home for a 4-1 lead. After Bowden reached on a single, Rhylie Makawe tripled to add two more runs. Allie Arneson followed with a single to score Makawe and chase Bobcats starting pitcher Izzy Milligan.
Edie Fairchild entered in relief and coaxed Cook to line into a double play to end the inning, but the damage had been done.
Trailing 7-1, Nelson started to inch back in the bottom of the fourth. Cameron Conrad’s sac fly scored Ashley Silva to make it 7-2.
In the home fifth, the Bobcats rallied for three more runs. Three singles loaded the bases for Silva, who produced a run with a fielder’s choice. One batter later, Allen delivered again with a two-RBI double for 7-5.
Aledo pitcher Lauren Craine then retired the next seven batters to close out the game and series.
