When the floodgates opened, it was Sarah Miller there again to give the White Settlement Brewer softball team the boost it needed.
Miller homered twice, driving in six runs, and was also the winning pitcher as Brewer beat Burleson 14-4 on the Elks’ home field Friday.
The Class 4A area-round sweep by Brewer (22-10-1) advances the Bears to the regional quarterfinals. Brewer took a 6-1 victory over Burleson (20-9) in Game 1 on Thursday when Miller pitched six innings of one-run ball and hit a three-run homer.
Brewer will play Azle in the next round. The Hornets beat Joshua 8-2 Friday night.
Miller (18-6) tossed six innings Friday, striking out three. She also homered in consecutive at-bats, driving in three runs in the fifth and hitting a solo shot in the sixth.
“Right now, I think we’re being consistent in that [Miller] is doing what she needs to do on the mound, and the defense is playing behind her,” Brewer coach Vera Ortega said. “We’re just going to continue this momentum and focus one game at a time.”
Burleson pitcher Hannah Loudermilk (20-9) struggled with her control, walking three batters and running up a three-ball count 12 times.
And the damage started early, as Brewer sent seven batters to the plate in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Destiny Chavarria flied out to center field, but Danielle Day followed with a walk, then Shannon Rhodes doubled before Miller’s single through the right side.
A homer from Jordan Kisselburg gave Brewer a 3-0 lead before Burleson stepped to the plate.
Miller was able to work out of jams, stalling the Burleson offense, which left eight runners on base. The Elks loaded the bases in the sixth inning, but Miller was able to work out of that.
